Medellín Strengthens Support for Refugees and Migrants in Partnership with UNHCR and the Government of Japan

In Medellín, international cooperation continues to translate into concrete actions to assist refugees and improve people’s lives.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Medellín and Metropolitan Area Cooperation and Investment Agency (ACI Medellín), UNHCR, the Secretariat for Social Inclusion and Family, and the support of the Government of Japan, the city continues to strengthen care, protection, and solutions for refugees and migrants forced to flee their homes. This partnership represents a commitment to the inclusion, dignity, and well-being of populations facing highly vulnerable situations. Beyond institutional support, the goal is to generate concrete responses that expand opportunities, strengthen protective environments, and advance integration processes within the region.

International cooperation plays a key role in this effort. Through these partnerships, Medellín is able to connect local needs with global allies committed to building humane, sustainable, and impactful solutions. In this case, the support from UNHCR and the Government of Japan helps to build a stronger response to the challenges faced by refugees and migrants in the city.

For ACI Medellín, these types of partnerships reflect the importance of building bridges between the local community and the international community to promote initiatives that drive social transformation. Cooperation not only brings together resources and capabilities but also strengthens the potential to build a more inclusive city that is prepared for and responsive to the realities of those who need support the most.

In Medellín, international cooperation is also measured in terms of the lives that find protection, support, and new opportunities. That is the profound value of working with partners who believe in human dignity as the foundation for building the future.
