Medellín lidera el Premio Hábitat LATAM 2026 por sus aportes a la transformación urbana

 

Medellín took first place in the 2026 LATAM Habitat Award for the Comprehensive Sustainability Assessment of Latin America and the Caribbean, an evaluation that assesses territorial development based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The award was presented by the Honorary and Evaluation Committee for Cities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The city ranked first among 20 cities in Latin America and the Caribbean with a score of 73.1 points, ahead of Curitiba and São Paulo.
In the environmental dimension, the report highlighted the network of 30 green corridors, which is credited with reducing urban temperatures by up to 3 °C, as well as EPM’s water management, which ensures access to drinking water and the operation of treatment plants recognized for their technical standards.

The local governance model also stood out thanks to the coordination between the public sector and the innovation ecosystem. Of particular note was the strength of EPM as a 100% publicly owned company that allocates up to 30% of its net profits to fund social infrastructure, along with the role of Ruta N and the Innovation District in promoting GovTech, biotechnology, and software development.
The report awarded Medellín a score of 100 out of 100 in the urban transformation category.
This recognition joins other awards such as the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize, the C40 Cities Award, and the ITDP Sustainable Transportation Award. With this distinction, Medellín strengthens its international standing as a leader in sustainability, social well-being, and public innovation.
